Neither date is arbitrary. Ladakh lies in the rain shadow and takes six tenths of an inch of rain in the whole month, Leh at 77 degrees by two in the afternoon and 50 by five in the morning, with ice on a bottle at the Korzok camp. Three of the eight lie south of the equator, where this is midwinter and the Madagascar highlands take their coldest nights of the year.

Who else wants these weeks

Schools in Austria and southern Germany break up in the first days of July, which puts domestic families into the guesthouses the harvest week uses. Ladakh fills with Indian travellers instead, because it stays dry while most of that country is under monsoon. Reunion runs its own winter school holidays through the second half of the month and the mountain gites take island families first. Closer in, the week around the fourth puts more traffic on the Missouri rivers than any other week.

Moving a week either way

A week earlier in the Wachau and the fruit is still green on the fans below the terraces; a week later and you get the tail of the crop and a fair in the square. A week later in Ladakh is the wettest month of its year, still under an inch of rain, but the road west goes out most seasons. Palawan runs the other way round: its season opened in October and its last starts fall around the middle of this month.
